PAX (Penny Arcade Expo)
The Pioneering Community-First Video Game and Tabletop Festival
Founded in 2004 by webcomic Penny Arcade creators Jerry Holkins and Mike Krahulik, PAX revolutionized gaming conventions by putting everyday players and community celebration at the forefront.
Conception and Gamer-First Ethos
PAX was conceived as an antidote to press-only, corporate-exclusive trade shows like E3, aiming to provide a vibrant sanctuary where gamers could directly play upcoming builds, meet independent creators, and bond over shared passions. Starting in 2004 at Bellevue, Washington with 3,300 attendees, it surged in scale, consistently selling out massive convention centers within minutes.
Expansion and Championing Indies
The festival expanded into a global network including PAX East in Boston, PAX Aus in Melbourne, and tabletop-focused PAX Unplugged in Philadelphia. Through initiatives like the 'PAX 10' and 'PAX Rising', it offered pivotal visibility to independent game studios, establishing hits that defined modern gaming culture.
