Valve Corporation
Pioneers of Narrative First-Person Shooters and the Steam Digital Ecosystem
Valve Corporation is an American video game developer, publisher, and digital distribution company founded in 1996 by Gabe Newell and Mike Harrington. Renowned for landmark releases including Half-Life, Portal, Counter-Strike, and Dota 2, Valve also operates Steam, the dominant digital storefront for PC gaming.
GoldSrc and the Narrative Leap of Half-Life
Rewriting much of id Software's Quake engine codebase into the proprietary GoldSrc engine, Valve released Half-Life in November 1998. Foregoing pre-rendered cutscenes in favor of real-time first-person narrative continuity, it won over 50 Game of the Year awards. Valve fostered community mods, officially acquiring community projects Counter-Strike and Day of Defeat.
Steam and Hardware Innovation
Launched in September 2003, Steam revolutionized PC software retail by providing automated updates, anti-cheat countermeasures, and direct developer-to-consumer pipelines. In subsequent decades, Valve ventured into specialized hardware, engineering the HTC Vive partnership, Valve Index VR system, and the handheld Steam Deck.
