Noita (2020)
Nolla Games' Physics-Simulated Roguelite Where Every Single Pixel Burns, Melts, and Reacts
Developed and published in 2020 by Helsinki-based indie team Nolla Games (composed of Petri Purho, Olli Harjola, and Arvi Teikari), Noita is a masterclass in emergent simulation and roguelite design where 'every pixel is physically simulated.' Steeped in rich Finnish mythology (Noita meaning witch), players delve into deep subterranean caverns, crafting and combining magical wand spells to overcome monstrous denizens and environmental hazards. Powered by the proprietary Falling Everything engine, dynamic interactions between acids, flammables, freezing waters, and poisonous gases create chain reactions of spectacular chaos.
The Falling Everything Engine
Every grain of sand, pool of acid, drop of blood, and wooden timber possesses independent thermal, density, and chemical properties. Igniting a pool of oil produces thick fumes that gather near ceilings, while frost spells can freeze rushing rivers into slippery solid ice.
Wand Crafting and Emergent Catastrophes
Wand crafting operates as a modular programming language. Chaining splitters, projectile speeds, recursive triggers, and explosive modifiers enables absurd synergies that can either disintegrate subterranean bosses or trigger hilarious self-inflicted obliteration.
