Dead Cells (2018)
Invention of the 'Roguevania' and Winner of Best Action Game at The Game Awards
Engineered by Bordeaux-based worker cooperative Motion Twin and lead designer Sébastien Bénard in 2018, Dead Cells fused procedural roguelite progression with interconnected Metroidvania level design, coining the genre 'Roguevania'. Players control a decapitated homunculus reanimating a prisoner's corpse to escape a mutagenic island.
Kinetic 'Game Feel' and Combat Cadence
Dead Cells achieved legendary status through its unmatched 'game feel', rendered by rendering 3D models into low-resolution 2D sprites for sub-frame responsive animations. Blending melee strikes, shields, deployed turrets, and invulnerable dodge rolls created an intoxicating kinetic rhythm.
Cooperative Heritage and Over 10 Million Copies
Created under Motion Twin's anarcho-syndicalist equal-pay corporate structure and expanded by spinoff team Evil Empire with the acclaimed Return to Castlevania DLC, the game surpassed 10 million copies sold, famously winning Best Action Game at The Game Awards 2018 over AAA titans.
