Dragon's Dogma (2012)
Hideaki Itsuno and Capcom's Tactile Open-World Fantasy Action RPG of Monster Climbing and Asynchronous Pawns
Directed by Devil May Cry veteran Hideaki Itsuno and launched by Capcom in May 2012, Dragon's Dogma married austere Western tabletop high fantasy with razor-sharp Japanese arcade combat kinetics. Players journey across the peninsula of Gransys as the heartless Arisen, clambering directly onto towering mythological beasts alongside asynchronous AI companions known as Pawns who carry hard-won quest knowledge between players' worlds.
The Heartless Arisen and Freeform Giant-Monster Grappling
Conceived in design notebooks by Hideaki Itsuno as early as 2000 before entering full production atop Capcom's MT Framework engine, Dragon's Dogma opens with the colossal red wyrm Grigori plucking the beating heart from a coastal fisher's chest and daring the newly reborn 'Arisen' to reclaim it. Across nine Vocations—including inventive hybrids like the ricochet-firing Magick Archer and shield-enchanting Mystic Knight—Itsuno injected fighting-game hit-stop and spell spectacle into a dangerous open world where moonless nights turn genuinely pitch-black once oil lanterns get doused by water. Rather than hacking endlessly at ankles, warriors leap onto a Griffin's feathered wings before takeoff, hack off a Chimera's venomous snake tail, or scale a Cyclops' spine to strike its single eye.
The Asynchronous Rift Pawn Network and Dark Arisen Legacy
To evoke multiplayer camaraderie without mandatory co-op lobbies, Itsuno and lead designer Kento Kinoshita invented the Pawn system: each player sculpts one devoted Main Pawn and summons two additional Pawns crafted by strangers through the interdimensional Rift. When borrowed Pawns return home, they bring Rift Crystals, gifts, and organic behavioral memory—shouting warnings about ambush caves, revealing hidden dungeon levers, or automatically exploiting elemental boss weaknesses witnessed in another player's campaign. In April 2013, Kinoshita directed the acclaimed expansion Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen, adding the harrowing subterranean gauntlet of Bitterblack Isle and cementing a passionate global following that culminated twelve years later in Dragon's Dogma 2.
