Devil May Cry Series
Hideki Kamiya, Capcom, and the Birth of the 'Character Action' Genre
Born out of an early Resident Evil 4 prototype in 2001 by Hideki Kamiya, Devil May Cry pioneered the 'Character Action' genre through half-demon Dante, aerial sword juggles, and the iconic dynamic 'Stylish!' combat scoring meter.
From Resident Evil 4 Prototype to Stylish Aerial Juggling
Conceived initially as Resident Evil 4, director Hideki Kamiya's acrobatic protagonist proved too swashbuckling and kinetic for claustrophobic survival horror. Producer Shinji Mikami greenlit the concept as an original IP. Launching demons skyward with sword slashes and suspending them mid-air with rapid-fire pistol bursts established the cornerstone of stylish character action.
The Style Ranking and Devil May Cry 3 Pinnacle
Scoring players on combat flair via dynamic grades (Dope, Cool, Bravo, Absolute, Stylish!), the game prioritized aesthetic mastery. Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening (2005) cemented the franchise's supremacy, introducing four interchangeable combat styles (Swordmaster, Gunslinger, Trickster, Royalguard) and the intense rivalry with Dante's twin brother Vergil.
