Warhorse Studios (2011)
The Czech Visionaries Behind Kingdom Come: Deliverance Pioneering Authentic Medieval Realism
Founded in 2011 in Prague by Mafia creator Daniel Vávra and veteran designer Martin Klíma, Warhorse Studios achieved international renown by boldly rejecting fantasy tropes in favor of strict historical verisimilitude. Their magnum opus, Kingdom Come: Deliverance (2018), sold over 6 million copies by authentically recreating 15th-century Bohemia.
Kickstarter Defiance Against Industry Dogma
When major publishers unanimously rejected Daniel Vávra's pitch for a story-driven medieval RPG devoid of magic, dragons, or wizards, Warhorse turned directly to players via a 2014 Kickstarter campaign. Raising £1.1 million, the studio proved massive global appetite for a grounded simulation tracking blacksmith's son Henry across the civil strife of the Holy Roman Empire.
Authentic Historical Fencing and Living Ecosystems
Warhorse consulted medieval historians, architects, and martial arts experts to engineer an intricate directional sword-combat system derived from authentic German and Italian fencing treatises. Recreating castles, monastery frescoes, and dense Bohemian forests within CryEngine, Warhorse redefined immersive historical role-playing.
