TERA (2011)
Bluehole Studio's 'True Action Combat' Revolution That Founded the Krafton Empire
Developed in Seoul by Bluehole Studio (founded by former Lineage II veterans and later evolving into Krafton) and launched in 2011, TERA (The Exiled Realm of Arborea) fundamentally disrupted the MMORPG landscape by ditching antiquated tab-targeting in favor of reticle-driven 'True Action Combat.' Set within Arborea, a dream-realm formed from the slumbering bodies of two primordial titans, players chose among seven eccentric races—including the demonic Castanic, the nature-attuned Elin, and the stony Baraka. Renowned for its thrilling BAM (Big Ass Monster) field encounters requiring manual hitbox dodging and blocking, TERA surpassed 28 million registered players worldwide.
Reticle Aiming and Iconic BAM Hunts
Combat operated with the immediacy of a third-person action game: projectiles had actual flight velocities and hitboxes, tanks manually held shields to absorb incoming impacts, and slayers somersaulted behind titans. Wandering BAMs provided legendary group challenges.
Foundation of Krafton and Industry Lineage
Backed by an unprecedented 40 billion KRW development investment, Bluehole proved that South Korean engineering could master non-targeting network synchronization at scale, later leveraging this institutional prowess to launch PUBG.
