People Can Fly (2002)
High-Velocity Shooting Pioneers, Painkiller, and the Skillshots of Bulletstorm
Founded in 2002 in Warsaw by Adrian Chmielarz, Andrzej Poznański, and Michał Kosieradzki, People Can Fly is celebrated for visceral gunplay, physics-driven acrobatics, and over-the-top weaponry. Known for arena classic Painkiller (2004), the inventive 'Skillshot' mechanics of Bulletstorm (2011), co-developing Gears of War: Judgment, and the sci-fi cooperative RPG-shooter Outriders.
Painkiller and the Art of the Stakegun
Releasing in 2004, Painkiller conquered old-school shooter fans through hyper-fast bunny-hopping mobility and titanic gothic bosses. Armed with the Stakegun—which fired wooden stakes that pinned demonic skeletons to chapel walls with satisfying Havok physics—People Can Fly established Poland's technical prowess in 3D action.
Bulletstorm and the Epic Games Alliance
Acquired by Epic Games, PCF conceived Bulletstorm (2011). Centered on an energy whip ('Leash'), sliding kicks, and the creative 'Kill with Skill' system—rewarding players for kicking enemies into carnivorous plants or electric grids—it revitalized arcade shooter design. Regaining their independence in 2015, they delivered the multi-million-player sci-fi shooter Outriders (2021).
