Origin Systems (1983)

'We Create Worlds', Richard Garriott's Virtues, and the Genesis of the MMORPG

United States · 1983 · studio

Founded in 1983 in Texas by Richard Garriott ('Lord British'), his brother Robert, and astronaut father Owen Garriott, Origin Systems embodied its proud ethos: 'We Create Worlds'. Revolutionizing computer role-playing through the philosophical ethics of the Ultima series and pushing PC silicon to the brink via Chris Roberts' cinematic space combat saga Wing Commander, Origin gave birth to the modern MMORPG in 1997 with Ultima Online.

The Quest for the Avatar and Wing Commander's Cinematic Power

In 1985, Richard Garriott rejected standard 'slay the evil wizard' tropes to create Ultima IV: Quest of the Avatar, requiring players to cultivate Eight Virtues (Honesty, Compassion, Valor, Justice) through ethical dialogue and behavioral dilemmas. In 1990, Chris Roberts created Wing Commander, driving a wave of PC sound card and 386 hardware upgrades with its dynamic branching cinematic space dogfights.

Ultima Online and the Birth of the Virtual World

Incubating legends like Warren Spector and lead designer Raph Koster, Origin released Ultima Online in 1997. It became interactive entertainment's first commercially colossal living virtual ecology—where hundreds of thousands of players engaged in dynamic economies, guild politics, and player-versus-player crime, prompting Garriott to coin the term 'MMORPG'. Clashing corporate cultures under EA ownership eventually led to Origin's closure in 2004.
