Monolith Soft (1999)
Philosophical Sci-Fi Worldbuilding and the Xenoblade Chronicles Epic
Founded in 1999 by former Square luminaries Tetsuya Takahashi and Hirohide Sugiura with Namco, and acquired by Nintendo in 2007, Monolith Soft is an elite JRPG developer renowned for titanic open worlds and philosophical storytelling. Beyond its Xenoblade Chronicles trilogy, Monolith was foundational in engineering the open worlds of Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom.
From Xenogears to Nintendo Partnership
After directing the ambitious Xenogears at Square, Tetsuya Takahashi sought complete creative autonomy to pursue Gnostic, philosophical, and hard sci-fi themes, creating the Xenosaga trilogy and the critically acclaimed Baten Kaitos. In 2007, Nintendo acquired Bandai Namco's stake, integrating Monolith Soft into its core first-party family.
The Xenoblade Paradigm and Transforming Zelda
Debuting on the Wii in 2010, Xenoblade Chronicles delivered a breathtaking open world set atop two frozen dueling titans, pushing the hardware to its absolute limits without loading screens. Monolith's terrain rendering prowess led Nintendo to assign dozens of Monolith engineers to co-develop the topography of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom.
