Re-established in late 2015 in Tokyo as an independent studio by legendary auteur Hideo Kojima following his departure from Konami, Kojima Productions bridges cinematic auteur filmmaking with vanguard game design. Utilizing Guerrilla Games' Decima Engine, the studio created Death Stranding (2019), pioneering the asynchronous 'strand game' genre.

Independence and Partnership with Sony

After concluding nearly three decades on the Metal Gear saga, Kojima reorganized Kojima Productions as an independent entity backed by Sony Interactive Entertainment. Dutch studio Guerrilla Games gifted Kojima the source code to their advanced Decima Engine, fostering a unique international technical alliance.

Death Stranding and the Social Strand System

Starring Norman Reedus and Mads Mikkelsen, Death Stranding (2019) defied conventional genres by turning traversal, terrain physics, and logistical delivery into core gameplay. Its asynchronous multiplayer system allowed players worldwide to collaboratively erect bridges, roads, and safe houses across their respective dimensions, reflecting themes of human connection.
