Gran Turismo Series
The Real Driving Simulator Created by Kazunori Yamauchi and Polyphony Digital
Released in 1997 for the Sony PlayStation, Gran Turismo revolutionized console automotive simulation through accurate vehicular physics, authentic licensing tests, and vast vehicle catalogs, selling over 90 million units worldwide.
Yamauchi's Vision and Five Years of Engineering
In an era dominated by arcade drift racers, Kazunori Yamauchi envisioned a simulation that computed vehicular weight transfer, suspension geometry, and tyre adhesion in real time. Over five intense years of development, Yamauchi and a tiny team of seven engineers pushed the PlayStation hardware beyond its perceived boundaries, faithfully modeling 140 licensed cars.
Gran Turismo Mode, Licensing Tests, and Automotive Heritage
Gran Turismo introduced players to authentic car culture by starting them with humble used Japanese hatchbacks and progressing through rigorous driving licenses. Spanning monumental landmarks such as Gran Turismo 2 (650 cars), Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec, and Gran Turismo 4, the franchise grew into an automotive industry benchmark, culminating in the GT Academy that transformed video game pilots into genuine professional motorsport racers.
