Dying Light (2015)
First-Person Open-World Survival Action Combining Freeform Parkour and Asymmetric Day-Night Cycles
Developed in Wrocław, Poland by Techland on its proprietary Chrome Engine 6 and published by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment in January 2015, Dying Light is a first-person open-world survival action game set in the quarantined city of Harran. The title combined momentum-based rooftop parkour—refined with consultation from parkour founder David Belle—with an asymmetric day-night predator ecosystem.
Chrome Engine 6 Architecture and Parkour Traversal in Harran
Following its earlier open-world infected survival work on Dead Island (2011), Wrocław-based studio Techland initiated Dying Light to build an original intellectual property tailored to eighth-generation console hardware and DirectX 11 personal computers. Engineered on Chrome Engine 6, the project introduced physically based rendering, dense crowd simulation, and uninterrupted vertical streaming across the fictional Middle Eastern-inspired coastal metropolis of Harran, divided primarily into the low-rise Slums and the multi-story masonry of Sector 0 (Old Town). In October 2014, Techland cancelled planned PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 ports, citing memory and frame-rate ceilings incompatible with the engine's dynamic lighting and traversal density. Players control Kyle Crane, an undercover operative parachuted into Harran by the Global Relief Effort (GRE) to recover stolen pathogen research amid competing factions led by tower coordinator Harris Brecken and local warlord Kadir Suleiman. To replace conventional corridor navigation, Techland implemented its 'Natural Movement' system and consulted French parkour co-founder David Belle to calibrate ledge-grabbing geometry, gaze-directed climbing, momentum conservation, and elevated escape routes.
Asymmetric Day-Night Ecology, Cooperative Play, and Post-Launch Expansion
Mechanically, Dying Light structured exploration around a continuous twenty-four-hour circadian clock that inverted player vulnerability after sunset. During daylight hours, survivors scavenge crafting materials, repair degradable melee weapons, contest humanitarian airdrops against armed militia patrols, and navigate past slow-moving infected crowds using acoustic distractions and rooftop zip-lines. At nightfall, electrical blackouts across Harran introduce fast, ultraviolet-sensitive apex predators known as Volatiles capable of scaling buildings at player speed, shifting optimal tactics from direct melee combat toward stealth, ultraviolet flashlight deterrence, and sprint evasion toward fortified safe zones in exchange for doubled agility and combat experience points. The release supported four-player drop-in cooperative campaign progression alongside 'Be the Zombie,' an asymmetric 4v1 multiplayer mode casting an invading player as a tendril-swinging Night Hunter. In February 2016, Techland released the rural vehicular expansion Dying Light: The Following, followed by years of live updates that carried total lifetime sales past twenty million units and established the foundation for Dying Light 2 Stay Human (2022).
