Dune Series
Westwood Studios, Arrakis, and the Foundation of Real-Time Strategy
Engineered in 1992 by Westwood Studios, Dune II: The Building of a Dynasty codified the modern Real-Time Strategy (RTS) genre through spice harvesting, base construction, fog of war, and mouse-driven command interfaces.
Brett Sperry and the RTS Architectural Template
Seeking to translate Frank Herbert's desert sci-fi epic into a kinetic digital format, Westwood co-founder Brett Sperry coined the term 'real-time strategy'. Dune II established every cornerstone mechanic of the genre: using the mouse to select and issue movement orders, harvesting resource Spice to fund military construction, laying concrete foundations for base expansion, and clearing dynamic fog of war.
Sandworms and the War for Arrakis
Featuring asymmetric factions—the honorable Atreides, militaristic Harkonnen, and mercenary Ordos—the battlefield was plagued by colossal indigenous Sandworms that swallowed expensive siege tanks whole. The design was so profoundly influential that it directly spawned Command & Conquer and Blizzard's Warcraft, forever changing computer gaming.
