Captain Commando (1991)
Capcom's Four-Player CPS-1 Sci-Fi Beat 'Em Up Starring Its Reimagined Corporate Mascot
Unleashed on Capcom's CP System (CPS-1) arcade hardware in September 1991 by producer Tokuro Fujiwara and planner Akira 'Akiman' Yasuda, Captain Commando transformed Capcom's 1980s NES manual mascot into a visor-wearing superhero in crime-ridden Metro City in 2026. Teaming an alien mummy, a ninja, and a mech-piloting infant, it expanded Final Fight's brawler blueprint with dash attacks and hijacked mecha.
CAP-COM's Mascot Reborn in Metro City 2026
Before starring in his own cabinet, 'Captain Commando'—whose name fuses the first three letters of CAPcom's corporate syllables—appeared as a medallion-wearing spaceman thanking players inside late-1980s North American NES boxes and instruction booklets. Tasked with crafting a four-player comic-book successor to Final Fight, planner and artist Akira 'Akiman' Yasuda redesigned him as Mars Scum-fighting hero Captain Commando, armed with fire-and-lightning Energy Gloves in a futuristic 2026 vision of Metro City. His eccentric Commando Team remains one of arcade gaming's wildest ensembles: knife-spinning extraterrestrial mummy Mack the Knife (Jennetti in Japan), katana-wielding ninja Ginzu (Sho), and super-genius toddler Baby Head (Hoover) riding a homemade bipedal mech.
Dash Offensives, Elemental Gore, and Hijackable Mecha
Captain Commando substantially accelerated Capcom's belt-scrolling combat grammar ahead of Cadillacs and Dinosaurs. Every hero gained a double-tap sprint with running strikes and jumping dash attacks alongside crowd-clearing desperation moves such as the ground-shocking Captain Corridor. Akiman's expressive CPS-1 sprite work gave weapons distinct visual payoffs: Ginzu's katana slices thugs neatly in half, Mack's sub-atomic knives melt foes to bone, and Captain's gauntlets char enemies crisp. Across nine stages—from museums and ninja houses to the orbital starship Callisto against villain Scumocide (Genocide in Japan)—players grab rocket launchers, laser rifles, and three types of punch, flame, and freeze-ray Ride Armor mecha knocked out from beneath enemy pilots.
