Cadillacs and Dinosaurs (1993)

Capcom's CPS-1 Brawler Pinnacle, the Legend of Mustapha Cairo, and the 1953 Classic

Japan · 1993 · game

Inaugurated in April 1993 by Capcom on the CPS-1 Dash arcade board, Cadillacs and Dinosaurs stands as one of the most beloved and impeccably balanced side-scrolling beat 'em up masterpieces ever conceived. Adapted from Mark Schultz's acclaimed underground comic series Xenozoic Tales, the game transported players to the flooded 26th-century ruins of the 'City in the Sea' (Manhattan) where dinosaurs and humans coexisted. Starring mechanic Jack Tenrec, diplomat Hannah Dundee, powerhouse Mess O'Bradovich, and agile crowd-favorite engineer Mustapha Cairo, it perfected brawler firearm dynamics.

Cadillacs and Dinosaurs (1993)

The Xenozoic Setting, Mustapha Cairo, and Kinetic Crowd Control

Iterating upon the chassis of Final Fight, Capcom achieved peak brawler responsiveness with Cadillacs and Dinosaurs. While Jack provided balanced brawling, engineer Mustapha Cairo—distinguished by his yellow cap and green cargo trousers—became an international arcade legend due to his blisteringly fast dash velocity and devastating flying drop-kick. Environmental dinosaurs like Triceratops and Velociraptors functioned as neutral systemic agents: docile when green, but turning crimson with primal rage when struck, frequently turning upon poachers.

Firearm Arsenal Integration and the High-Speed Cadillac Pursuit

Unlike contemporaries where firearms were relegated to single-shot gimmicks, Cadillacs and Dinosaurs fully integrated ballistic firearms: Colt .45 pistols, Uzis, M-16 assault rifles, and bazookas offered authentic ammunition clips and recoil physics. In Stage 3, players radioed in Jack's 1953 Cadillac convertible, driving the roaring vehicle down a coastal highway while running down enemy motorcycle bosses to the tune of driving rockabilly synth, setting an untouchable high-water mark for 1990s arcade escapism.
