Impressions Games and the 'Walker' Agent-Based Roman City-Builder Benchmark

Birleşik Krallık · 1992 · game

Founded in 1992 by David Lester at Impressions Games and perfected in 1998's Caesar III, the franchise established the historical city-builder genre through aqueduct engineering, patrician housing evolution, and the deterministic 'walker' logistics model.

Caesar Series

David Lester and the 'Walker' Logistics Model

Departing from SimCity's abstract regional power grids, Impressions Games simulated civic infrastructure through autonomous roaming agents known as 'Walkers'. Humble plebeian tents evolved into luxurious patrician estates only if market peddlers walked past with pottery and olive oil, bathhouse engineers supplied water, and prefects extinguished fires. Controlling walker patrol routes using road roadblocks became an art form in city planning.

Aqueducts, Roman Deities, and the Emperor's Wrath

Caesar III captured classical engineering: building gravity-fed aqueducts from mountain reservoirs, staging colosseum chariot games, and appeasing five Roman gods (Mars, Venus, Ceres, Neptune, Mercury). Neglecting temple sacrifices brought devastating divine curses, while failing to fulfill Emperor Caesar's tax and military quotas resulted in imperial legions marching to raze your settlement.
