Feargus Urquhart, Chris Avellone, and the Literary Zenith of Computer Role-Playing

United States · 1996 · studio

Formed in 1996 within Interplay under division director Feargus Urquhart and named after the Scottish peninsula, Black Isle Studios represents the literary and philosophical high-water mark of isometric computer role-playing. Direct creators of Fallout 2, Planescape: Torment, and the Icewind Dale series, as well as crucial co-developers and publishers of BioWare's Baldur's Gate, Black Isle's core leadership subsequently founded Obsidian Entertainment.

Fallout 2 and Mastery of the Infinity Engine

Formalized as an elite internal division, Black Isle assumed control of the post-nuclear franchise to deliver Fallout 2 in 1998, dramatically expanding moral complexity with the corruption of New Reno and the Vault City technocracy. Concurrently, the studio partnered with Canadian medical doctors Ray Muzyka and Greg Zeschuk at BioWare, co-producing and publishing Baldur's Gate and adapting the Infinity Engine for Icewind Dale's tactical dungeon crawl perfection.

Planescape: Torment: Interactive Fiction as High Philosophy

In 1999, lead designer Chris Avellone directed Planescape: Torment, universally regarded as interactive software's narrative magnum opus. Anchored by the existential interrogation 'What can change the nature of a man?', players navigated the amnesiac immortal Nameless One through a metaphysical, macabre multiverse containing over 800,000 words of poetic, branching dialogue. When financial insolvency forced Interplay to shutter the division in December 2003, Urquhart, Avellone, and their team reconstituted as Obsidian Entertainment.
