Spore
Will Wright and Maxis' Single-Cell to Galactic Empire Evolution Simulator
Directed in 2008 by SimCity and The Sims auteur Will Wright at Maxis, Spore simulated the entire evolutionary arc of life from primordial soup to interstellar space exploration, powered by revolutionary procedural animation.
Will Wright's Grand Cosmic Arc across Five Stages
Conceived as Will Wright's ultimate simulation, Spore partitioned the history of life into five distinct genres. Beginning in primordial soup as a microscopic tide-pool organism, players emerged onto land to socialize and hunt, progressed into stone-age toolcraft during the Tribal phase, united planets during the Civilization phase, and terraformed star systems in the expansive 4X Space stage.
Procedural Inverse Kinematics and Sporepedia
The game's technological triumph was the Creature Creator. Regardless of whether a player sculpted a beast with seven spindly legs, asymmetric claws, or eyes on stalks, procedural inverse-kinematic algorithms computed natural walking gaits, combat leaps, and mating dances on the fly. User creations automatically populated the procedural galaxies of players worldwide through the cloud-based 'Sporepedia'.
