Sacred (2004)
Ascaron Entertainment's Seamless Open-World German Action-RPG Across the Continent of Ancaria
Sacred is a 2004 isometric open-world action role-playing game developed by German studio Ascaron Entertainment. Set across the hand-crafted fantasy realm of Ancaria after necromancer Shaddar accidentally unleashes a Sakkara Demon, the game distinguished itself from Diablo clones through seamless streaming exploration, horseback combat, custom Combo Masters, and six sharply distinct classes.
Seamless Ancaria, Horseback Warfare, and Six Asymmetrical Heroes
Known previously for historical trading sims like Patrician and Port Royale, Gütersloh studio Ascaron Entertainment entered the action-RPG arena with a refusal to copy Diablo II's randomized dungeon corridors. Instead, Sacred streamed a vast hand-painted 2D isometric world populated by 3D polygonal characters where over seventy percent of the continent of Ancaria—from green Bellevue villages and scorching Khorad-Nur deserts to volcanic wastelands—could be ridden across without loading doors, even when stepping straight inside multi-story taverns. Each of the six starting heroes—winged Seraphim, Gladiator, Battle Mage, poison-wielding Dark Elf, Wood Elf, and the Vampiress who fought as a noble knight by day and blood-drinking predator by night—spawned in a unique hometown prologue and fought directly from horseback.
Rune Trading, Combo Crafting, and Two Million Copies of German RPG Wit
Rather than rigid skill trees, Sacred dropped Combat Art runes as physical loot; unneeded runes from other classes could be bartered at village Combo Masters to socket multi-step custom attack chains or forged directly into weapon slots alongside blacksmith bonuses. Scored by Dag Winderlich, the world brimmed with self-aware German developer humor—hidden sunglasses, Easter-egg side quests, and hundreds of individually written comedy epitaphs on graveyards across every town. Selling more than two million copies worldwide to become Germany's most commercially successful RPG of 2004, it expanded via the free Sacred Plus overhaul and the 2005 Sacred Underworld add-on introducing the cannon-toting Dwarf and winged Daemon.
