Rez (2001)

The Miracle of Synesthesia, Techno-Trance Rhythms, and Reawakening AI Eden

Japan · 2001 · game

Conceived by visionary producer Tetsuya Mizuguchi at Sega's United Game Artists for the Dreamcast and PlayStation 2 in 2001, Rez is an immortal milestone of sensory synesthesia. Plunging through wireframe vector cyberspace to reboot Eden—a sentient mainframe overwhelmed by existential dread—players shoot down corrupt security algorithms.

Rez (2001)

Wassily Kandinsky and Synesthetic Design

Drawing profound conceptual inspiration from abstract painter Wassily Kandinsky's studies of multi-sensory synesthesia, every lock-on projectile and target detonation dynamically triggers polyrhythmic percussion samples and melodic synth chords that harmonize seamlessly with underlying techno and trance compositions.

The Trance Vibrator and Rez Infinite Revival

Accompanied during its PS2 launch by the peripheral 'Trance Vibrator' to physically pulse bass frequencies into the player, Rez evolved beyond traditional interfaces. Reimagined in 2016 as Rez Infinite with the free-flying particle spectacle of Area X, it won Best VR Game at The Game Awards as an audiovisual triumph.
