Retro Studios (1998)
Architects of the Metroid Prime Trilogy and Nintendo's Premier Western Arm
Founded in 1998 in Austin, Texas, by Jeff Spangenberg and acquired fully by Nintendo in 2002, Retro Studios pulled off one of the greatest design triumphs in video game history with Metroid Prime. Transforming a sacred 2D exploration franchise into an immersive first-person adventure (97 Metacritic), Retro subsequently revitalized Donkey Kong Country.
Metroid Prime and First-Person Environmental Storytelling
At the urging of Shigeru Miyamoto, Retro abandoned third-person prototypes to rebuild Metroid on GameCube in the first-person perspective. Introducing Samus Aran's atmospheric Scan Visor—allowing players to uncover the biological and architectural lore of Tallon IV—alongside condensation on Samus's visor, Metroid Prime earned universal praise as a timeless masterpiece.
Donkey Kong Country Revitalization and Metroid Prime 4
Entrusted with Rare's beloved platformer, Retro crafted Donkey Kong Country Returns (2010) and the universally revered Tropical Freeze (2014), celebrated for intricate silhouette stages and peerless kinetic platforming. In 2019, Nintendo restarted development on Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, officially returning the franchise to its Austin creators.
