Magic Carpet (1994)
Real-Time 3D Voxel Terrain Deformation, Flight Physics, and Arcane Warfare
Engineered by programming wizard Glenn Corpes and Peter Molyneux at Bullfrog Productions in 1994, Magic Carpet was a breathtaking technological tour de force. Piloting a high-speed flying carpet across morphing fractal worlds, an arch-mage battles mythological leviathans and rival spellcasters to harvest golden mana beads.
Real-Time Voxel Terrain Morphing
Magic Carpet featured a revolutionary custom 3D engine that dynamically altered terrain in real-time. Casting 'Volcano' caused fiery mountains to physically erupt out of the ground, while 'Earthquake' split rifts across valleys, reshaping geographic elevations during the heat of aerial combat.
Castle Sovereignty and Aerial Dogfights
Players established expanding multi-tiered wizard spires, dispatching hot-air balloons to harvest fallen mana. Battling rival AI mages, wyverns, and hydras at blistering frame rates, the game captured Action Game of the Year honors in 1995.
