Katamari Damacy (2004)

Keita Takahashi's Pop-Art Surrealism, Rolling Chaos, and Pure Interactive Whimsy

Japan · 2004 · game

Conceived by artist and sculptor Keita Takahashi at Namco for PlayStation 2 in 2004, Katamari Damacy is an exuberant, eccentric pop-art triumph celebrating kinetic whimsy. After the eccentric King of All Cosmos drunkenly obliterates all stars from the heavens, his diminutive son, The Prince, descends to Earth pushing an adhesive clump (the Katamari) to roll up debris.

Katamari Damacy (2004)

From Paperclips to Skyscrapers: The Joy of Accumulation

Controlled via dual analog sticks mimicking tank treads, players roll a sphere that physically adheres to any object smaller than its current diameter. Beginning with thumbtacks and sushi, the Katamari gradually snowballs to absorb stray cats, horrified pedestrians, fuel tankers, and entire city skylines in a delirious rush of spatial empowerment.

Shibuya-kei Soundtrack and MoMA Induction

Propelled by an unforgettable Shibuya-kei big-band jazz, funk, and vocal pop soundtrack featuring 'Katamari on the Rocks', the title won Excellence in Game Design at the 2005 Game Developers Choice Awards. Celebrated as visionary contemporary art, it was formally acquired into the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA).
