Netherlands · 2000 · studio

Founded in 2000 in Amsterdam by Hermen Hulst, Arjan Brussee, and Michiel van der Leeuw, Guerrilla Games is the crown jewel of Dutch game development and an elite PlayStation Studios anchor. Moving from the industrial sci-fi trench warfare of Killzone to the majestic post-post-apocalyptic open worlds of Horizon Zero Dawn and Forbidden West (35+ million franchise sales), Guerrilla is globally renowned for its Decima Engine.

Killzone and Pushing Console Silicon

After rebranding from Lost Boys Games, Guerrilla launched Killzone (2004) on PS2. With Killzone 2 (2009) on PlayStation 3, the studio pushed volumetric lighting, real-time physics, and deferred rendering to graphical zeniths, creating an oppressive sci-fi war atmosphere opposing the militaristic Helghast empire.

Horizon Zero Dawn and the Decima Legacy

Transitioning from linear shooters to vast open worlds, Guerrilla unleashed Horizon Zero Dawn (2017). Starring huntress Aloy in a lush Earth reclaimed by colossal machine fauna, it sold over 25 million copies. Its underlying Decima Engine was so admired that Hideo Kojima selected it to build Death Stranding, cementing an unprecedented technical partnership between Amsterdam and Tokyo.
