Gram Games (1010!, Merge Dragons! & Genre Innovation)

Türkiye · 2012 · studio

Gram Games, established in 2012 in Istanbul by Mehmet Ecevit, Kaan Karamanci, and Alpay Kasal, is a pioneer of the mobile gaming revolution. Facing imminent bankruptcy in early 2014, the team staged an internal game jam that birthed the minimalist block puzzle *1010!*, generating over 100 million viral downloads. Expanding to London, the studio pioneered the global 'merge' genre with *Merge Dragons!* (2017) before being acquired in May 2018 by Zynga for $250 million in cash.

Gram Games (1010!, Merge Dragons! & Genre Innovation)

From the Brink of Insolvency to 1010! Stardom

In early 2014, Gram Games was weeks away from closing down after several ambitious midcore projects failed to gain commercial traction. To rekindle creative energy, the founders held a 48-hour studio game jam. The resulting prototype, *1010!*, took inspiration from Tetris but eliminated gravity, creating a relaxed spatial puzzle. Released with zero marketing spend, it virally captured the number one spot on the US App Store, saving the company.

Inventing the Merge Genre with Merge Dragons!

Establishing a creative studio in London in 2016, Gram Games architected *Merge Dragons!* (2017). By formalizing the mechanic of dragging and matching three identical environmental items to evolve them into higher-tier resources within a fantasy camp, Gram Games birthed the multi-billion-dollar 'Merge' mobile gaming sub-genre.

The $250 Million Zynga Acquisition and Studio Culture

In May 2018, Zynga acquired Gram Games for $250 million in cash plus earnouts, marking a watershed moment for the Turkish tech startup ecosystem. Famed for its radical transparency, flat corporate hierarchy, and unlimited vacation culture, Gram Games served as an entrepreneurial incubator for dozens of subsequent Istanbul game founders.
