Dungeon Keeper Series
Peter Molyneux and Bullfrog's 'It's Good to Be Bad' Underground Simulation
Engineered in 1997 by Peter Molyneux at Bullfrog Productions, Dungeon Keeper inverted fantasy conventions by placing players as an evil subterranean Dungeon Lord, managing devilish minions and slapping imps into obedience.
'It's Good to Be Bad': The Subversive Overlord Formula
Peter Molyneux's parting magnum opus at Bullfrog subverted high-fantasy tropes: rather than leading righteous adventurers into labyrinths, players commanded the evil Dungeon Heart. Excavating gold veins, constructing torture chambers and hatcheries, and slapping sluggish Imp workers to accelerate production, players repelled invading paladins with gruesome boulder traps.
The Possession Spell and the Horned Reaper
Dungeon Keeper's technical marvel was the 'Possession' spell, allowing players to instantly plunge down from the overhead god perspective into the first-person eyes of any minion—seeing with compound fly vision or skeletal night-sight. Anchored by the volatile, blood-lusting Horned Reaper, it represents one of the most innovative strategy games ever designed.
