Dhruva Interactive (1997)
India's First Video Game Development Studio and Global 3D Art Powerhouse
Established in March 1997 in Bengaluru by entrepreneur Rajesh Rao, Dhruva Interactive was the pioneering first video game development and art production studio in India. Founding the subcontinent's gaming ecosystem from scratch, Dhruva evolved into an essential co-development and 3D modeling partner for global AAA franchises including Forza Motorsport, Halo, and Payday before being acquired by Rockstar Games.
Rajesh Rao and the Foundation of Indian Gaming
In the late 1990s, India lacked formal game development pipelines, retail publishing networks, or specialized education. Rajesh Rao demonstrated a vision for domestic digital entertainment, securing an agreement with Intel in 1998 to produce 'Mission: Pingali', an interactive demo optimized for the Intel 740 graphics accelerator, recognized as the first commercial video game software originating from India.
Global AAA Artistry and the Rockstar Acquisition
Throughout the 2000s and 2010s, Dhruva specialized in high-fidelity hard-surface vehicle and environmental 3D modeling, partnering with Microsoft, Turn 10 Studios, and Electronic Arts. Following an acquisition by Sweden's Starbreeze in 2016, Rockstar Games acquired Dhruva in May 2019 for $7.9 million, merging its seasoned talent pool into Rockstar India to contribute to blockbusters like Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead Redemption.
