Descent Series

Parallax Software and the Six-Degrees-of-Freedom (6DOF) Space Shooter

Amerika Birleşik Devletleri · 1995 · game

Created in 1995 by Mike Kulas and Matt Toschlog at Parallax Software, Descent revolutionized first-person shooters by abandoning gravity for complete Six-Degrees-of-Freedom (6DOF) true polygonal navigation.

Descent Series

Zero Gravity 360-Degree Freedom and Spatial Vertigo

Unlike corridor-bound 2.5D shooters, Descent rendered a fully polygonal world allowing pitch, roll, and yaw along every axis. Piloting a mining ship through labyrinthine zero-gravity alien mines, players engaged infected robots with no designated floor or ceiling, producing a disorienting, exhilarant sense of spatial awareness.

Multiplayer Dogfights and the Birth of Volition

Descent introduced blistering 8-player IPX LAN anarchic multiplayer battles that turned office computer networks into dogfighting arenas. Parallax Software later split into Outrage and Volition, channeling their 6DOF and physics expertise into classic franchises like Descent: FreeSpace and Red Faction.
