Control (2019)
Remedy's Brutalist Architecture, The Oldest House, and Jesse Faden's Telekinetic Tour-de-Force
Engineered by Finland's premier narrative studio Remedy Entertainment under Mikael Kasurinen and Sam Lake and published in 2019 by 505 Games, Control is an acclaimed third-person supernatural Metroidvania masterpiece. Infiltrating 'The Oldest House'—a shifting, extradimensional brutalist skyscraper in Manhattan housing the secretive Federal Bureau of Control (FBC)—newly appointed Director Jesse Faden confronts the corruption of an alien resonance known as the Hiss. Armed with the shapeshifting Service Weapon, levitation, and destructive telekinesis, it won Best Art Direction at The Game Awards.
Kinetic Telekinesis and The Shapeshifting Service Weapon
Leveraging Remedy's custom Northlight engine physics, combat was a ballet of destruction: ripping concrete chunks from walls and hurling office desks at relativistic speeds alongside telekinetic levitation. The mythical Service Weapon morphs dynamically into shotgun-like Shatter, sniper-like Pierce, or explosive Charge configurations.
Brutalist Geometry and the Remedy Connected Universe
Drawing deep creative inspiration from the SCP Foundation and Jeff VanderMeer's New Weird fiction, the shifting geometric concrete labyrinth of the Oldest House stood as a graphical tour-de-force showcasing real-time Ray Tracing reflections. Its 'AWE' expansion directly integrated Alan Wake, establishing the shared Remedy Connected Universe.
