Agate Studio (PT Agate International, 2009)
Bandung University Collective Scaling from Browser Flash Releases into Multi-Platform Console and Enterprise Production
Founded in Bandung, West Java on April 1, 2009 by eighteen university students including Arief Widhiyasa and Shieny Aprilia, Agate grew from viral Adobe Flash web games such as Earl Grey and this Rupert Guy, Football Saga, and Valthirian Arc into PT Agate International, one of Southeast Asia's largest multi-platform consumer, console, co-development, and enterprise gamification studios.
Bandung Student Boarding-House Origins and Browser Flash Breakthroughs
Agate Studio was formally established in Bandung, West Java on April 1, 2009 by eighteen undergraduate students and recent alumni—drawn largely from Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB)—who pooled modest personal funds and worked initially out of a shared student boarding house (kos-kosan) with minimal business capital. Led by founding Chief Executive Officer Arief Widhiyasa alongside co-founder and Chief Operating Officer Shieny Aprilia, the team capitalized on the global browser-portal monetization ecosystem of the late 2000s, which allowed Indonesian developers to earn international advertising and sponsorship revenue in US dollars without physical retail distribution. Their rhythmic narrative browser game Earl Grey and this Rupert Guy won international recognition in Mochi Media's 2010 Flash Forward competition, followed by the persistent browser social sports game Football Saga on Facebook, the original role-playing management browser installment of Valthirian Arc, and the mobile physics-slingshot release Up In Flames published worldwide by Electronic Arts subsidiary Chillingo.
Corporate Scaling as PT Agate International, Consoles, and B2B Gamification
Rather than relying exclusively on volatile consumer hit cycles as Adobe Flash declined in the mid-2010s, the company restructured corporately as PT Agate International and diversified across three parallel revenue pillars: enterprise gamification, international co-development engineering, and multi-platform consumer intellectual property. Its B2B unit—later branded Level Up powered by Agate—built recruitment assessments, banking simulations, and corporate training software for major Indonesian financial institutions, telecommunications carriers, and state-owned enterprises, securing steady cash flow and institutional venture backing from investors including Telkom Indonesia's MDI Ventures. Simultaneously, Agate expanded its consumer pipeline to home consoles and Steam, partnering with British publisher PQube to release Valthirian Arc: Hero School Story (2018) and Valthirian Arc: Hero School Story 2 (2023) across Windows, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch alongside urban-folklore mobile RPG Code Atma and visual novel Celestia: Chain of Fate, while Shieny Aprilia succeeded Widhiyasa as CEO in June 2022 over a workforce exceeding two hundred specialists. Alongside internal development, the studio established Agate Academy to train Indonesian university graduates in commercial programming, art pipelines, and production management.
