4A Games (2006)
The Ukrainian Visionaries Behind Metro 2033 and the Cutting-Edge 4A Engine
Founded in 2006 in Kyiv by core S.T.A.L.K.E.R. engine architects Oles Shyshkovtsov, Aleksandr Maksimchuk, and Andrei Prokhorov, 4A Games is an elite first-person shooter studio world-renowned for adapting Dmitry Glukhovsky's post-apocalyptic Metro literary universe into the critically acclaimed Metro 2033, Metro: Last Light, and Metro Exodus.
From S.T.A.L.K.E.R. to the Subterranean Ruins of Moscow
Having engineered the pioneering X-Ray Engine at GSC Game World, Shyshkovtsov and his colleagues departed to construct the 4A Engine from scratch. Collaborating closely with author Dmitry Glukhovsky, 4A Games created a brutally atmospheric survival shooter emphasizing tactile physical mechanics: wiping condensation from gas mask visors, manually pumping pneumatic rifle pressure, and conserving military-grade ammunition as currency.
Metro Exodus and the Real-Time Ray Tracing Frontier
Following regional geopolitical upheavals in 2014, 4A Games opened a principal studio in Malta while maintaining its massive engineering hub in Kyiv. In 2019, Metro Exodus expanded Artyom's journey across post-nuclear Russia aboard the locomotive Aurora. The game served as the industry's premier technological benchmark for real-time ray-traced global illumination, establishing 4A Games as an elite global graphics pioneer.
