From Pentominos to Tetraminos

Inspired by the classic tabletop puzzle Pentomino, Alexey Pajitnov simplified the pieces to four-square geometric shapes termed 'tetraminos'. Operating without graphical hardware on the Elektronika 60, Pajitnov rendered the cascading blocks using bracket characters '[ ]'. The game proved wildly addictive across Soviet research labs.

Cold War Licensing and Game Boy Triumph

With foreign software rights administered by Soviet state agency ELORG, entrepreneur Henk Rogers brokered a landmark handheld agreement for Nintendo. Bundled with the Game Boy in 1989, Tetris sold over 35 million copies and transformed portable electronics.
