Terra Nova: Strike Force Centauri (1996)
Looking Glass's Groundbreaking Tactical Powered-Armor Outdoors Sim
Engineered by Looking Glass Studios and released in 1996, Terra Nova: Strike Force Centauri is a seminal tactical first-person shooter that pioneered squad-command systems and expansive outdoor rendering. Putting players in command of Strike Force Centauri—an elite unit protecting Alpha Centauri colonies against Earth's autocratic Hegemony—it featured Powered Battle Armour (PBA) exosuits, intricate ballistic physics, and remarkably autonomous squadmate artificial intelligence.
PBA Exosuits and Outdoor Terrain Tech
Players customized their Powered Battle Armour with jump jets, personal shield systems, and heavy ordnance. The hybrid voxel-polygon engine rendered sprawling extraterrestrial wildernesses, introducing realistic line-of-sight elevation tactics and outdoor ballistic trajectories years ahead of its peers.
Autonomous Squadmates and Tactical Agency
Commanding up to three AI-driven squadmates, players issued nuanced field orders such as suppressive fire, perimeter reconnaissance, and flanking maneuvers. Though commercially underappreciated, it laid fundamental engineering groundwork for future team shooters such as Starsiege: Tribes and Halo.
