Japan · 2019 · game

Directed by Hidetaka Miyazaki at FromSoftware and published by Activision in 2019, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice is an intense action-adventure set in a mythologized Sengoku period Japan. Players assume the role of the one-armed shinobi Wolf, sworn to rescue the kidnapped Divine Heir Kuro from the desperate Ashina clan.

Posture Mechanics and Rhythmic Deflection

Departing from stamina-based combat, Sekiro pioneered the Posture meter, where clashing swords and executing split-second deflections directly erodes an opponent's physical balance. Breaking an enemy's posture enables a cinematic Deathblow, elevating melee dueling into a ferocious, millimeter-precise rhythm encounter.

The Shinobi Prosthetic and Verticality

Wolf's mechanical prosthetic arm incorporated grappling hooks, spring-loaded axes, firecrackers, and flame vents, granting dizzying vertical traversal across Japanese pagodas and snowy cliffs. Surpassing 10 million copies sold, Sekiro captured Game of the Year at The Game Awards 2019.
