Pac-Man (1980)

Non-Violent Game Design and the Birth of Gaming's First Global Mascot

Japan · 1980 · game

Pac-Man is a 1980 maze action game developed by Namco under lead designer Toru Iwatani. Designed to appeal beyond the male-dominated shooter audience with charming aesthetics and eating mechanics, it became a definitive pop culture phenomenon.

Design Conception and Ghost AI

Toru Iwatani conceived the character after removing a slice from a pizza. Crucially, each of the four ghosts featured distinct personality algorithms: Blinky gives direct chase, Pinky ambushes ahead of Pac-Man, Inky coordinates angles, and Clyde exhibits erratic wandering, generating organic tension.

Global Phenomenon

Renamed from 'Puck Man' for North American distribution by Midway to prevent vandalism, Pac-Man transcended gaming into mainstream popular music, animated television, and merchandising, becoming the highest-grossing arcade game of all time.
