NCSOFT (1997)

Pioneer of the Korean MMORPG Revolution and Creator of Lineage

South Korea · 1997 · studio

Founded in 1997 by Kim Taek-jin in Seoul, NCSOFT transformed South Korea and East Asia's massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) industry into a multibillion-dollar global force. Its flagship title Lineage (1998) defined Korean PC Bang (cybercafé) culture and laid the architectural groundwork for persistent online virtual economies.

NCSOFT (1997)

Lineage and the PC Bang Cultural Phenomenon

Launched in 1998, the 2D isometric MMORPG Lineage capitalized on South Korea's rapid nationwide broadband deployment. Centered on intense guild-versus-guild siege warfare, Lineage attracted millions of active subscribers and established the social fabric of PC Bangs, while sparking early legal and economic precedents regarding virtual property ownership.

Western Expansion and the Guild Wars Legacy

To expand its international footprint, NCSOFT acquired American studio ArenaNet—founded by former Blizzard leads. ArenaNet delivered the subscription-free Guild Wars (2005) and Guild Wars 2 (2012), which sold tens of millions of units worldwide and cemented NCSOFT's stature as a premier global online publisher and developer.
