Koudelka (1999)

Hiroki Kikuta and Sacnoth's Victorian Gothic Horror RPG That Birthed the Shadow Hearts Universe

Japan · 1999 · game

Koudelka is a 1999 gothic horror role-playing game developed by Sacnoth and published by SNK in Japan and Infogrames in the West across four PlayStation discs. Conceived, written, directed, and scored by Secret of Mana composer Hiroki Kikuta, it blended Resident Evil mansion exploration with grid-based tactical combat and theatrical English motion-capture performances, inaugurating the Shadow Hearts timeline.

Koudelka (1999)

Victorian Chamber Drama and Motion-Captured Stage Acting

Founded by former Square veterans with funding from arcade giant SNK, studio Sacnoth handed creative reins to composer Hiroki Kikuta, who traveled across Great Britain researching occult folklore and ecclesiastical architecture. Set entirely on Halloween night, October 31, 1898, inside Nemeton Monastery—an abbey turned blood-soaked prison in Aberystwyth, Wales—the story traps cynical nineteen-year-old Romani psychic Koudelka Iasant alongside brash London adventurer Edward Plunkett and pompous Vatican bishop James O'Flaherty. Remarkably for 1999, Kikuta recorded four English-speaking actors performing together in one studio like a stage play while motion-capturing full-body debates on faith, class hypocrisy, and grief.

Survival-Horror Scarcity, Breakable Weapons, and Shadow Hearts

During exploration, fixed pre-rendered gothic corridors evoke classic survival horror through gruesome environmental cadavers, occult cipher puzzles, whiskey-and-bread healing rations, and firearms or melee blades that physically shatter mid-fight if overused. Internally, however, creative clashes arose between Kikuta—who originally envisioned real-time action—and staff members led by art director Matsuzo Machida, resulting in random encounters fought across a four-by-seven tactical grid with customizable stat allocation. Although Kikuta departed afterward, Machida carried Nemeton Monastery, Roger Bacon, Halley, and Koudelka herself directly into 2001's PlayStation 2 cult classic Shadow Hearts, cementing Koudelka's place in dark-fantasy RPG history.
