Inscryption (2021)

Leshy's Cabin, Meta-Horror Deckbuilding, and 2022 GDC Game of the Year Winner

United States · 2021 · game

Masterminded by indie auteur Daniel Mullins and published by Devolver Digital in 2021, Inscryption is a genre-shattering odyssey fusing roguelite deckbuilding, physical escape-room puzzles, and psychological meta-horror. Trapped in a candle-lit log cabin across a wooden table from the glowing eyes of Leshy, players sacrifice blood to survive.

Inscryption (2021)

Sacrifice Mechanics and Cabin Room Investigation

The game opens as an eerie tabletop card battler where players sacrifice harmless squirrels to summon wolves and grizzlies using teeth extracted for balance weights. Stepping away from the game table to solve puzzles across the taxidermy-strewn cabin yields talking cards that actively conspire to undermine their captor.

Radical Genre Morphing and GDC Triumph

Inscryption achieved critical immortality by dismantling its own framework, evolving across acts into a 2D retro RPG and a cyber-horror interrogation accessing the player's personal hard drive. Shocking the industry, it captured Game of the Year at the 2022 Game Developers Choice Awards over major studio blockbusters.
