Hexen Series

Character Classes, Hub Architecture, and Action-RPG Shooter Fusion

Amerika Birleşik Devletleri · 1995 · game

Released in 1995 by Raven Software, Hexen: Beyond Heretic elevated first-person design by introducing Fighter, Cleric, and Mage character classes, intricate interconnected hub worlds, and puzzle-driven progression.

Hexen Series

Tripartite Class System and Hub World Geometry

Hexen deviated sharply from linear corridor shooters by allowing players to select among three distinct archetypes: the raw melee Fighter, the defensive Cleric, and the glass-cannon Mage. Rather than sequential level progression, Hexen organized levels into hubs where pulling a lever in a remote swamp solved puzzles or unlocked portcullises across multiple linked maps.

Action Code Scripting and Hexen II

Raven pioneered Action Code Script (ACS), enabling complex environmental interactivity such as dynamic earthquakes, crushing ceilings, and destructible pillars. In 1997, Hexen II migrated to John Carmack's true 3D Quake engine, adding an Assassin class and expanding the saga of the Serpent Riders across Mesoamerican, Egyptian, and Greco-Roman dimensions.
