Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec (2001)
Polyphony Digital's 14.89-Million-Selling PS2 Racing Showcase That Cemented Sixth-Gen Dominance
Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec is a 2001 racing simulation directed and produced by Kazunori Yamauchi at Polyphony Digital for Sony's PlayStation 2. Rebuilding every car model from scratch for the Emotion Engine to run at a locked 60 frames per second with shimmering asphalt reflections and force-feedback wheel support, it earned universal acclaim and sold 14.89 million copies as the PS2's defining early system-seller.
Emotion Engine Photorealism Over Raw Roster Count
First demonstrated at PlayStation Festival 2000 under the working title Gran Turismo 2000, Polyphony Digital's PlayStation 2 debut made a deliberate artistic trade-off. Rather than porting the 650 low-polygon cars of Gran Turismo 2, Kazunori Yamauchi's artists sculpted roughly 180 vehicles at nearly ten times the polygon budget—around 4,000 polygons per car—paired with multi-layered specular paint shaders. Running at a rock-solid 60 frames per second, the Graphics Synthesizer rendered wet-tarmac reflections along Special Stage Route 5, desert heat mirages, sunbeams filtering through Trial Mountain's redwoods, and gravel rally spray, providing the unmistakable visual leap early PS2 adopters craved.
Force-Feedback Driving, Career Progression, and Commercial Triumph
Beneath its broadcast-style replays, A-Spec refined the franchise's RPG-like Gran Turismo Mode: aspiring drivers cleared graduated license exams, tuned suspension geometry and gear ratios, monitored engine wear through oil changes, and progressed from Sunday Cup hatchbacks to open-wheel Formula 1-inspired machines and two-hour endurance events. Polyphony Digital also partnered with Logitech on the GT Force steering wheel, pioneering consumer force-feedback road texture on consoles. Bundled with red-box PlayStation 2 hardware across North America and Europe and holding a 95/100 Metacritic average, Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec sold 14.89 million copies—trailing only Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas on the platform.
