God of War Series
Santa Monica Studio, Kratos, and the Summit of Mythological Hack-and-Slash
Inaugurated in 2005 by David Jaffe at Santa Monica Studio, God of War defined spectacle combat through the Spartan Kratos, chained Blades of Chaos, and colossal Quick-Time-Event (QTE) mythological boss executions.
The Ghost of Sparta and Olympian Vengeance
Tricked by Ares into slaying his own family, Spartan general Kratos was cursed with their ashes bonded to his flesh, earning the moniker 'Ghost of Sparta'. Wielding the fiery Blades of Chaos chained to his forearms, the game set new benchmarks for kinetic hack-and-slash choreography, staging titanic encounters with the Hydra and Colossus of Rhodes via seamless Quick Time Events.
Norse Rebirth and the One-Shot Cinematic Masterpiece
After annihilating the Greek pantheon across God of War III, creative director Cory Barlog executed a breathtaking reinvention in 2018. Transported to Norse realms, the game adopted an unbroken single-shot camera perspective, the recallable Leviathan Axe, and a profound narrative exploring Kratos's fatherhood with his son Atreus, sweeping global Game of the Year honors.
