Evolution Championship Series (EVO)

From Northern California Arcades to Las Vegas Arenas

EVO debuted in 1996 as 'Battle by the Bay' in Sunnyvale, California, featuring 40 players on Super Street Fighter II Turbo and Street Fighter Alpha 2. Rechristened EVO in 2002 and relocated to Las Vegas, it preserved its egalitarian open-bracket format, allowing any amateur to register and test their mettle against global world champions.

Evo Moment #37 and the Sony Era

In 2004, Daigo Umehara executed 'Evo Moment #37', parrying Justin Wong's entire 15-hit Chun-Li Super Art with a sliver of health to claim victory, creating the most famous highlight in esports history. Acquired by Sony Interactive Entertainment and RTS in 2021, EVO expanded globally with Evo Japan while maintaining its grassroots fighting spirit.
