Dandara (2018)

Long Hat House's Directionless Afro-Brazilian Metroidvania and Tale of Resistance

Brazil · 2018 · game

Engineered by Belo Horizonte-based indie studio Long Hat House and published by Raw Fury in 2018, Dandara is an audacious, gravity-defying metroidvania that completely reimagined platforming locomotion. Inspired by the real-world historical Afro-Brazilian warrior and abolitionist icon Dandara dos Palmares, the game tasks the eponymous heroine with liberating the esoteric realm of Salt from oppression. Discarding conventional walking in favor of instantaneous ricocheting across salt-encrusted surfaces, it earned widespread international critical acclaim.

Dandara (2018)

Zero-G Trajectory Locomotion and Spatial Logic

Dandara fundamentally lacks standard walking or running animations. Movement is executed solely by aiming trajectories to vault instantly between special white-salt surfaces across floors, walls, and ceilings, dismantling traditional directional gravity during frantic bullet-hell boss encounters.

Afro-Brazilian Identity and Artistic Flourish

Infusing visual motifs from Brazilian modernist painter Tarsila do Amaral alongside the historic legacy of the Quilombo settlements, it delivered a profound anti-authoritarian narrative. Accompanied by Thommaz Kauffmann's atmospheric acoustic-electronic soundtrack, it remains a landmark of Latin American gaming art.
