Culpa Innata (2007)

Istanbul Studio Momentum DMT's Non-Linear 2047 Dystopian Detective Adventure Inspired by Alev Alatlı

Turkey · 2007 · game

Developed in Istanbul by Momentum Digital Media Technologies (Momentum AS) and published internationally by Strategy First in October 2007, Culpa Innata is an ambitious 3D point-and-click philosophical thriller inspired by Turkish novelist Alev Alatlı's Schrödinger's Cat universe. In the sanitized 2047 superstate of the World Union, Peace Officer Phoenix Wallis investigates a cross-border murder that unravels her society's engineered perfection.

Culpa Innata (2007)

Alev Alatlı's Philosophical Blueprint and the Sanitized Dystopia of 2047

Founded in Istanbul around proprietary 3D facial-lip-sync animation technology before pivoting to full game production under co-founder and writer Burak Barmanbek and designer Laura MacDonald, Momentum DMT drew explicit thematic inspiration from Turkish author and intellectual Alev Alatlı's dystopian novel cycle Schrödinger's Cat (Schrödinger'in Kedisi). Set in 2047 inside the border city of Adrianopolis (modern Edirne), Culpa Innata depicts a 'World Union' that has abolished poverty, disease, and traditional families by raising children in state Crèches, grading every citizen on a numerical Human Development and 'Selfishness' index, and walling off unassimilated 'Rogue States'. When World Union emigrant Vassily Bogdanov is murdered in neighboring Russia, newly promoted Peace Officer Phoenix Wallis is assigned a case that slowly exposes the authoritarian eugenics beneath her cheerful indoctrination.

Day-by-Day Investigation Schedules, Expressive Interviews, and International Acclaim

Rather than gating progress behind rigid inventory pixel-hunting, Culpa Innata structures its detective work around a calendar clock in which suspects keep morning, afternoon, and evening schedules—meaning Phoenix can interview only a handful of witnesses per day before debriefing over evening gossip with her status-obsessed best friend Sandra Pescara at Café Rose. Conversations leverage Momentum's detailed facial-expression system, requiring players to choose between official, casual, or probing interview stances that either coax confessions or shut witnesses down, alongside logic-driven forensic puzzles and multiple endings tied to Phoenix's shifting ideological score. Despite a modest budget and a cliffhanger setting up an unreleased sequel (Chaos Rising), international adventure outlets praised Culpa Innata as one of the sharpest socio-political sci-fi mysteries of the 2000s and a landmark narrative achievement for Turkish PC development.
