Oyungezer Magazine (Independent Turkish Game Journalism)

Türkiye · 2007 · movement

Oyungezer is a premier independent monthly print video game magazine established in November 2007 in Istanbul, Turkey by legendary editors Sinan Akkol, Serpil Uluturk, Goktug Yuksel, Tugbek Olek, and their colleagues (Seti Publishing). Resigning en masse from corporate magazine *Level* to preserve uncompromised editorial integrity, the editorial collective created a literary, humorous, and culturally foundational gaming publication that mentored two generations of Turkish gaming enthusiasts.

Oyungezer Magazine (Independent Turkish Game Journalism)

The Great Schism and the Manifesto of Independence

In September 2007, the entire editorial staff of corporate monthly *Level* resigned over creative independence and corporate constraints. Pooling personal savings to form Seti Publishing, they launched *Oyungezer* in November 2007 with a cover story on Crytek's *Crysis*. Branded 'A Magazine by Gamers for Gamers', the inaugural issue completely sold out at newsstands across Turkey.

Literary Depth and Geek Culture Stewardship

Rejecting dry review checklists, *Oyungezer* treated interactive entertainment as a profound artistic medium, publishing extensive essays exploring ludology, philosophy, and socio-political themes in games. It championed domestic indie development and covered pen-and-paper tabletop RPGs, fantasy literature, and cinema.

Endurance and Digital Transition

Surviving severe international paper import crises and economic turbulence that decimated print media across the region, *Oyungezer* sustained uninterrupted physical newsstand distribution for over a decade and a half through immense community patronage, transitioning gracefully into a premier digital authority.
