Chris Taylor (1966)
Creator of Total Annihilation, Pioneer of Strategic Zoom and Supreme Commander
Chris Taylor is a visionary Canadian video game designer and founder of Gas Powered Games. At Cavedog Entertainment, Taylor conceived Total Annihilation (1997), revolutionizing real-time strategy with 3D polygon terrain, calculated physics-based ballistics, and streaming economies. He later engineered Supreme Commander (2007), introducing 'Strategic Zoom'—a groundbreaking UI mechanic allowing seamless zooming from individual combat units to theater-wide continental command.
Total Annihilation and Physics-Based Warfare
Challenging the 2D sprite dominance of Westwood and Blizzard in 1997, Taylor's Total Annihilation incorporated true heightmaps, calculated elevation advantages for artillery, and true vector trajectory physics for missiles. The game's streaming energy-and-metal economy and Jeremy Soule's symphonic score cemented its status as one of the greatest strategy games ever designed.
Supreme Commander and Unbounded Strategic Scale
Developing Supreme Commander in 2007, Taylor dismantled tactical scale ceilings. Through his patented Strategic Zoom interface, commanders transitioned instantaneously between micro-managing a single gunship and orchestrating thousands of mechanized legions across hundreds of square kilometers, establishing a benchmark in massive-scale battlefield command.
