Blood
Monolith Productions' Occult Lovecraftian Gothic Horror FPS
Developed in 1997 by Monolith Productions, Blood pushed Ken Silverman's Build Engine to its pinnacle, charting the vengeful resurrection of undead gunslinger Caleb amid gothic terror and cinematic splatter.
Caleb's Vendetta and Cinematic Horror Roots
Drawing overt inspiration from Army of Darkness, The Shining, and H.P. Lovecraft, Blood cast players as Caleb, a resurrected 19th-century gunslinger betrayed by the dark deity Tchernobog. Awakening from his grave with the chilling words 'I live... again!', Caleb annihilated cultists using an inspired arsenal featuring voodoo dolls, aerosol cans, and lit dynamite sticks.
Build Engine Pinnacle and Voxel Technology
Led by Nick Newhard, Monolith enhanced the Build Engine with 3D voxel item rendering, dynamic lighting, and simulated physics that allowed players to kick decapitated zombie heads across floors. With brutal enemy hitscan accuracy and bone-chilling voice work by Stephan Weyte, Blood remains widely revered as one of the finest 1990s shooters.
