Beyond Divinity (2004)

Larian Studios' Buddy-Rivalry RPG Soul-Forging a Paladin and Death Knight Across Nemesis

Belgium · 2004 · game

Beyond Divinity (originally announced as Riftrunner) is a 2004 isometric role-playing game directed by Swen Vincke at Larian Studios. Set twenty years after Divine Divinity, it binds a necromancer-hunting Paladin's soul to a ruthless Death Knight inside the demonic dimension of Nemesis, pioneering Larian's fascination with bickering dual-protagonist party dynamics and tactical pause-and-play combat.

Beyond Divinity (2004)

Soul-Forged Enemies and Tactical Dual-Character Banter in Nemesis

Conceived at Larian Studios under the working title Riftrunner to assert independence from former publisher cdv, Beyond Divinity takes place twenty years after Lucian's ascension in Divine Divinity. When a devout Paladin clashes with dark sorcerers, the demon lord Samuel drags him into the alien prison world of Nemesis and 'soul-forges' him to a sarcastic Death Knight: if either warrior dies, the other perishes instantly. Replacing single-hero clicking with real-time-with-pause squad control, the campaign derives constant dark comedy from its odd-couple leads arguing over every moral choice across citadel dungeons, imp villages, and Raanaar resistance camps, foreshadowing the cooperative character friction of Original Sin a decade later.

3D Character Overhaul, Summoning Dolls, and Procedural Battlefields

Upgrading Divine Divinity's engine, Larian swapped 2D character sprites for crisp 3D polygonal models capable of displaying equipped armor piece by piece atop hand-drawn isometric backdrops, accompanied once more by Kirill Pokrovsky's atmospheric chamber-and-synth score. Players expanded their duo into a custom squad via magical Summoning Dolls—outfitting skeletal archers, golems, or elemental guardians with their own skill points—and stepped via enchanted keys into the 'Battlefields,' randomly generated pocket dungeons stocked with merchants and high-tier loot to break out of tough story bottlenecks. Bundled in retail boxes with Rhianna Pratchett's prequel novella Child of the Chaos, it deepened Rivellon's cosmic lore leading directly into Divinity II.
